Pakistan Reacts to Stanikzai's Comments: Claims Cannot Change Intl Law

Following the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai's comments that Afghanistan will never recognize the Durand Line, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry issued a statement stating that “any self-serving and fanciful claims regarding the legality and sanctity of the Pak-Afghan border cannot change the facts of geography, history and international law.”

The statement asked the current Afghan government to address Pakistan’s genuine security concerns.

“The Afghan side will be well advised to address Pakistan’s genuine security concerns than try to divert public attention by such unfortunate public pronouncements. Pakistan remains committed to facilitating fully regulated movement of people and goods across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border based on norms of interstate relations. We will continue to take steps to this end,” the statement reads.

This comes as the deputy minister of foreign affairs of the Islamic Emirate said that Afghanistan will never recognize the Durand Line as a border.

Speaking at a gathering in Logar on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Soviet Union's withdrawal from Afghanistan, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai said that Afghanistan’s territory is still on the other side of the line.

"Historically and in terms of international law, it is a problem between Afghanistan and Pakistan, but ultimately it is the right of the Afghan people to claim this land; But based on the rules,” said Sayed Muqadam Amin, an international relations analyst.

Earlier, the prime minister of the caretaker government of Pakistan, Anwar ul-Haq Kakar, in a special interview with TOLOnews claimed that the Durand Line is an internationally recognized “border” between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“The UN and 206 countries have approved this as an international border, what the Afghan people say about this is their internal discussion, in which I am not interested,” he said.

"We won't be rid of civil war and suffering until the Durand issue with Pakistan is resolved. War, misfortunes and setbacks will continue for us, and the main reason for that is the Durand Line,” said Akhtar Rasikh, a military analyst.

The Durand Line Treaty of 1893, signed between British India and the then Emir of Afghanistan, Amir Abdul Rahman Khan, was signed by the British, but so far none of the Afghan officials have recognized Durand as the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
