Paktia local officials said that in the past four years thirteen girl’s schools closed down in insecure parts of the province.
The provincial education department said the schools closed due to insurgent’s threats and the spread of insecurity.
“The security problems have caused some girl students to stop going to school or of being absent often,” said Kochai Zazai Education Director.
Meanwhile, Paktia governor Shamim Katawazai said that efforts are under way to reopen these schools.
“Provincial officials and the education department have started negotiations with tribal elders to find solutions to reopen these schools,” Katawazai said.
Education department officials said efforts made by local officials in the past four years have not helped much.
Abdul Rashid Osmani Zurmat district education director said that negotiations with Taliban started months back but so far these did not have any positive results.
Paktia education officials say that closing schools, and the lack of buildings for many schools, has discouraged students from going to school.
