Atta Noor Criticizes Govt, Calls NUG Symbolic

Balkh acting-governor Atta Mohammad Noor on Wednesday called the National Unity Government (NUG) a symbolic government that's wrapped up in its own internal conflicts.

Noor said the NUG leadership was not taking any concrete steps to implement their commitments .

"The main issues have not been solved and the NUG leadership has not acted honestly. I don't want to name specifically president or CEO. Yet all the government movements are symbolic and instead they should act honestly to their commitments," Atta Noor said.

Noor said he had shared his concerns months ago with the president and the CEO about the move of the war to the ‎north of the country but the NUG leaders were too involved in bargaining and they did not pay attention to the issue.

"From the first I was aware that the geography of war transferred to north I have shared these concerns in meetings with CEO and the president but despite their promises they did not address the problem," Noor added.

In addition, Noor criticized the nomination of Masoom Stanekzai for the post of Minister of Defense.

"Masoom Stanekzai who has been nominated for the ministry of defense. But what did he do for the High Peace Council. He has spent $60 million USD dollars but his work has not brought any results," Noor said.

However, Noor emphasized the need to strengthen the army and police forces, but said that if needed, former mujahedeen will mobilize to tackle insecurity.

"I am willing to strengthen police and army forces, but if needed mujahedeen should also be used in combat against security threats and I am in favor of that," Noor added.

Despite Noor supporting the notion of arming former commanders analysts believe the distribution of weapons to irresponsible men will add to insecurity problems in the long term.
