Faryab provincial governor’s office said Tuesday the Taliban launched an attack on the center of Kohistan district, in Qala Sadat, at about 10pm on Monday night.
Clashes lasted a few hours and by about 1am on Tuesday morning the district fell to the insurgent group.
Officials said during the attack Abdul Rahman Panah, the Kohistan district governor, along with eight security force members were killed.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Tahir Rahmani, Faryab provincial council member said that at least 13 soldiers were killed, and 16 others were wounded in the clash.
According to Panah, about 200 security force members are under Taliban siege in Qala Sadat and if reinforcements do not reach the troops soon they will either be killed or captured by the Taliban.
Four security force members are still missing, Rahmani added.
However, a source told TOLOnews that nine security force members are missing and the body of the Kohistan district governor, along with eight soldiers are with the Taliban. The source also said that the Taliban set fire to the district governor’s building and police headquarters.
This comes after Taliban attacked military check posts on Monday night in Sayad district of Sar-e-Pul province, killing three soldiers and wounding five others.
Another source told TOLOnews that a battalion has been destroyed and the army suffered heavy casualties.
Meanwhile, Zabiullah Amani, Sar-e-Pul governor’s spokesman said if reinforcements do not reach Sayad district, the district will fall to the Taliban.
Taliban have not commented on either incidents.
