Two small water dams costing more than $300,000 have been completed in Pusht-e-Rod district of Farah province.
The cost of building these dams has been paid by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
“These dams are located in Pusht-e-Rod district, and it took six months to complete them. Up to $310,000 dollars were spent,” said Abdul Salam Fazli, deputy governor of the district.
“As much as 400 meters, which is nearly 3,000 cubic meters, has been covered and a quality retaining wall has been built of about 220 to 230 meters,” said Mohammad Nawab, a local official.
These two dams deliver Farah Rod River water to agricultural lands in dozens of villages in the Pusht-e-Rod district and the center of Farah.
Meanwhile, some farmers and residents of Farah, who said the area faced drought and lack of water for agriculture for years, are now happy about the construction of these dams.
We are facing many problems. Thank God that the dam was completed today. The problems we had will be solved by trusting Allah,” said Noor Ahmad, a Farah resident.
Some other Farah residents want a speedier construction of the Bakhshabad dam in this province. According to them, in recent years, due to the lack of water, farmers started digging deep wells and the underground water level of this province has dropped very low.
“People are willing to help in any way to fix the dam. They are ready to sell their land and pay for this dam,” said Nisar Ahmad Mansoor, a Farah resident.
Farah is one of the agricultural provinces of the country, where most of the agricultural lands have been left uncultivated due to drought in recent years.
