Lack of Water in Daikundi Affecting Almond Yield

Some gardeners in Daikundi are worried about the decrease in almond products due to the drought in the province.

According to them, the lack of water has caused hundreds of almond trees in Daikundi to dry up or remain fruitless.

“If an almond tree does not bear fruit, people will no longer be able to provide expenses for their families. In these three or four years, we had a good harvest,” said Ewaz Ali, a gardener.

“Almond trees are destroyed and have no fruits, currently, I am destroying the trees that had fruits before because they have dried up and have no fruit due to the lack of water,” said Zamin Ali, a gardener.

Almonds are one of the most important horticultural products in Daikundi and provide about 70 percent of the income of the residents of the province.

The head of agriculture and irrigation of Daikundi also said that compared to last year, 9 metric tons of almond products have decreased in the province, but they are trying to support gardeners.

“Compared to last year, there has been a decrease of almost 9 thousand tons. Last year it was more than 29 thousand tons, but now more than 20 thousand tons of almonds have been harvested,” said Sher Ahmad Rafi.

Almonds, apples, apricots, and berries are among the most important products of gardeners in Daikundi province, and most of its residents provide for their family's expenses.
