Hanif Calls for Release of Afghan Assets in Meeting with Sinirlioğlu

Acting Minister of Economy Din Mohammad Hanif, in a meeting with Feridun Sinirlioğlu, special coordinator of the UN's assessment of the Afghanistan situation, requested the removal of restrictions and the liberalization of the country's foreign exchange capital by the United Nations.

The Ministry of Economy tweeted that the acting minister said that the country's economic situation should not be used politically. According to the Ministry of Economy, in the meeting there was a discussion about strengthening the relations of the international community with Afghanistan and focusing on development programs to improve the economic situation.

The special coordinator of the UN's assessment of the Afghanistan situation recently arrived in Kabul.

“The acting Minister of Economy in his meeting with the special coordinator of the UN's assessment of the Afghanistan situation focused on development projects and the improvement of relations between the international community and Afghanistan and called for the removal of restrictions and the release of assets by the UN,” said Abdul Rahman Habib, a spokesman for the MoE.

Economists said that the visits of these officials cannot solve the ongoing challenges in Afghanistan.

“The contact of the special coordinator of the UN's assessment of Afghanistan is a good step but I think solving the financial challenges… is related to the political engagement alongside the government of Afghanistan,” said Sayed Masoud, an economist.

In late April, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Feridun Sinirlioğlu of Türkiye to lead an independent assessment to provide recommendations for addressing challenges faced by Afghanistan, the office of the UN spokesman announced.
