UAE Concludes Term on UN Security Council

The UAE Mission to the UN said on X that it concluded its term on the UN Security Council for 2022 -2023.

“Emirati diplomacy, under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan ... sought to be a principled and pragmatic voice on a turbulent international stage,” the UAE mission said.

“We promoted our values of tolerance and co-existence, advocated for Palestine and other Arab causes, championed the Women, Peace, and Security agenda in Afghanistan and Haiti, and advanced the Council’s engagement on Climate, Peace, and Security. In these fractured times, we kept the faith with diplomacy, consensus and bridge-building. It has been our great honour and responsibility to serve.”

During its tenure of Security Council, the UAE hosted and co-hosted many important meetings on Afghanistan including the recent approval of resolution 2721.

“Regarding the human rights issues and peace and stability in Afghanistan, the UAE had a very clear and decisive stance. The resolution, which was based on an independent assessment and approved, was one of the shared achievements of the UAE,” said Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Chargé d'Affaires of Afghanistan's Permanent Mission to the UN.

The Islamic Emirate’s Spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, meanwhile said that the UN is under the influence of powerful countries.

“They might have had some sympathy and we do not doubt it. But this organization (UN) is under the influence of powerful countries. The UAE and other countries who are not permanent members don’t have much influence,” Mujahid said.

Political analyst Najib Rahman Shamal said that Afghanistan should adhere to the resolution of the UNSC.

“Afghanistan is currently not in a condition to solve its problems by itself alone, thus it should go along with the resolution of the UN Security Council which is not in contrast with the national and religious values in a bid to attract the support of the international community,” he said.

“When the representative is introduced, it is obvious that the Islamic Emirate will be not displeased because the language of understanding between the Islamic Emirate and the international community is communicated through someone else and the Islamic Emirate cannot express its wishes and views with the world,” said Aminullah Ehsas, a political analyst.

The UN Security Council is composed of five permanent members that are the US, China, Russia, the UK and France; and 10 temporary members. The five permanent members have the right to veto a UN decision.
