Paving Begins on Portion of Kabul-Kandahar Road

On Saturday a project on the Kabul-Kandahar highway -- from the Arghandi area to Durrani Bazar in Maidan Wardak -- which cost 800 million afghani, was inaugurated.

The acting minister of Public Works during the inauguration ceremony said that the construction of a 480 km highway has been contracted with seven companies.

"Kabul-Kandahar Road is 480 km and this road has 46 bridges," said Mohammad Esa Sani, acting Minister of Public Work.

The governor of Kabul, speaking at the ceremony, added that the Islamic Emirate is committed to the implementation of the project.

"We call on companies to pay attention to the quality of these roads and work transparently," said Mohammad Qasim Khalid, Kabul governor.

Meanwhile, the economic deputy PM asked the responsible companies to complete the work as soon as possible.

"We ask the responsible companies to complete the work with high quality and as soon as possible and help citizens," said Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the economic deputy PM.

The Chamber of Commerce and Investment also said it considers the reconstruction of the Kabul-Kandahar Road a fundamental step in the revival of business and commerce in the country.

"With the construction of this road business will progress and fresh fruits will arrive on time," said Mohammad Yonis Momand, head of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Emirate also started a reconstruction project of 80 kilometers of the Salang crossing last week.
