Attack on Mosque in Baghlan Sparks Domestic and Foreign Reactions

The suicide attack on the Imam Zaman mosque in Pul-e-Khomri, the center of Baghlan province, has sparked reactions in Afghanistan and abroad.

Former president Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah, the former chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, called the attack inhumane and un-Islamic and urged that those responsible to be held accountable.

Former president Hamid Karzai condemned the attack, saying that the attack on the worshipers is "a terrorist act and is against Islamic and human principles and values."

"I strongly condemn this inhumane and un-Islamic act and emphasize that committing such acts is not acceptable and unforgivable in any form of belief and thought,” Abdullah Abdullah said on X.

Meanwhile, the US special envoy for women, girls and human rights in Afghanistan, Rina Amiri said: “Distressed to hear of the wounding & killing of worshippers at the Pule Khumri Shia Mosque. Attacks against the Shia community are a threat to the diversity that defines Afghanistan. My deepest condolences to the families. This brutality must end. There has been enough suffering."

“UNAMA expresses deep sorrow and condolences to all those killed and wounded in this afternoon’s explosion in a Shi’a Mosque in Pul-e Khumri. We are working on the ground to establish facts about the incident,” UNAMA said on X.

“I condemn today's attack killing dozens of Shia worshippers at a mosque in Pul-e Khumri Baghlan and claimed by ISKP. My condolences to the victims & their families. Prevention, protection & accountability are needed for Afghanistan Shia population that continues to be targeted,” Richard Bennett said.

Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said in a conference that the UN mission in Afghanistan expressed its deep sorrow and condolences to all those killed and wounded in the explosion in the Shia mosque in Pul-e-Khumri.”

"Targeting worshipers in the mosque is one of the most horrible terrorist crimes and a sign that the perpetrators are far away from the merciful and true teachings of Islam,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, spoke more on the attack on Imam Zaman mosque.

"This shows that the Daesh phenomenon is on the verge of extermination, as they attack a mosque in a distant province without a security guard. Even a little child can do it,” Mujahid said.

Daesh claimed responsibility for the suicide attack on the Imam Zaman mosque in Baghlan on Friday that left seven people dead and seventeen injured, but witnesses to the incident believe the actual death and injury toll to be higher.
