Kamal Khan Dam Water Allowed Into Iran: Mujahid

Water from Kamal Khan Dam has been released toward Iran, specifically to the Sistan and Baluchestan province, the Islamic Emirate spokesperson said.

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, stated that due to recent rains and the dam reaching capacity, the Islamic Emirate decided to fulfill Iran's water rights.

Ensuring Iran's water rights from the Helmand River has been a significant demand from Iranian authorities to the Islamic Emirate, leading to heightened tensions between Kabul and Tehran in recent years.

"Our efforts are ongoing to fill water reserves in Afghanistan and uphold our commitments to Iran. Releasing the water is the right thing to do," Mujahid told TOLOnews.

However, farmers in Nimroz said that they have suffered greatly due to recent droughts and must benefit from the Kamal Khan Dam as a priorty.

"The people of Nimroz and farmers should be the priority. In the past two years of drought, we have suffered greatly," said Gul Ahmad, a farmer in Nimroz.

"First, provide us with water. Once our crops are grown, then give the excess water to our neighbors," said Ahmad Khan, a farmer in Nimroz.

"Now that the Islamic Emirate government has decided to allocate some water to our neighbors, the transfer of waters to neighbors must be based on a political and economic equation to ensure the rights of the Afghan people are not denied," stated Fahim Faramarz, an economist.

The Helmand River Treaty was signed by the then Prime Minister of Afghanistan, Mohammad Musa Shafiq, and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Hoveida in 1973.

According to the treaty, Afghanistan committed to sharing the water from the Helmand River with Iran and will supply 26 cubic meters of water per second, or 850 million cubic meters annually.
