Russia Reports Record One-Day Rise in Coronavirus Deaths

Russia said on Tuesday 174 people with the coronavirus had died in the past 24 hours, a record one-day amount that pushed the nationwide death toll to 3,807.

Brazil deaths by COVID-19 reached 24,512 on Tuesday, with 1,039 new deaths over the last 24 hours, the health ministry said.

The number of infections in Brazil rose to 391,222, with 16,324 new cases.

Also, Germany’s government and state premiers agreed to extend social distancing restrictions to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic until June 29, a senior government official said on Tuesday.

The agreement follows a row between federal and state authorities over how fast to ease lockdown measures that have helped Europe’s most populous country weather the outbreak with a relatively low number of deaths over the past two months.

The Australia recorded its youngest victim of COVID-19 after a 30-year-old man with underlying health conditions died in Queensland state, having shown symptoms of the disease for weeks but without getting tested, officials said on Wednesday.

The latest case brings to 103 the number of deaths recorded in Australia, from more than 7,100 cases. The island continent been among the most successful nations to contain the coronavirus spread, which officials attribute to early travel restrictions, social distancing measures and widespread testing.
