MPs Cancel Ministerial Nominees Session over Saleh’s Remarks

Afghanistan’s parliament on Tuesday decided to hold a session for six ministerial nominees over a First Vice President Amrullah Saleh’s remarks who accused some lawmakers of involvement in corruption.

Saleh who also leads Afghanistan the Green Trend movement addressed a side event on anti-corruption efforts at the Geneva conference accused some “certain” Afghan lawmakers of involvement in big corruption cases and said so far such none of them have been investigated.

Saleh’s statement was met with strong backlash from members of the Afghan parliament including Speaker Mir Rahman Rahmani who alleged that the Green Trend has links is an intelligence unit and that it is funded by a foreign nation.

“The Green Trend is an intelligence agency; I can prove it for you. It belongs to a foreign country. It’s funded and assisted by a country,” said Rahmani.

Lawmakers called on Saleh to provide credible evidences for his claims and disclose those MPs whom he believes are involved in corruption.

“No one is able to snatch the impunity that has been granted to a lawmaker in the constitution,” said Ghulam Hussain Naseri, an MP from Maidan Wardak.

“If the president or members of the government including the first vice president or any individual want to have control on everything, then they should remove democracy and announce their own authoritarian government,” said Munawar Shah Bahaduri, an MP.

“It was my great mistake in my life that I cast my ballot for Amrullah Saleh,” said Shahpoor Hassanzoi, an MP.

“He should step down,” said MP Qazi Hanafi, referring to Saleh.

The six ministerial nominees were included Haseena Safai, nominee for the Ministry of Women Affairs (MoWA), Qudratullah Zaki, nominee for the Ministry of Transport  (MoT), Najibullah Yamin, nominee for the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW), Noor Rahman Akhlaqi, nominee for the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR), Mahmoud Karzai, nominee for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and Haroon Chakhansuri, nominee for the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.
