Three Afghan senators—Mohammad Anwar Bashliq, Mohammad Azim Qoyash and Liyaqatullah Babakarkhil–who were arrested on charges of accepting $40,000 in bribes, were released on bail, the Attorney General’s Office said on Sunday.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the Senate opposed their arrest based on the law and asked for their release.
The arrest was made last week by the National Directorate of Security and the Attorney General’s Office, according to a statement.
The Afghan senate—the Meshrano Jirga—last week said in a statement that a delegation has been assigned to assess the arrests of the senators.
The Afghan Senate said that the three are members of the economy committee and had traveled as part of a delegation to Mazar-e-Sharif city to monitor the security and economic situation in Balkh, especially the activities of the customs office.
Following the arrests, watchdog organizations said the issue requires a thorough investigation.
