Afghanistan Discussed on Sidelines of G20

Afghanistan was part of the discussion among the top leaders in the G20 summit held in Rome.

US president Joe Biden and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel met on the sidelines of the meeting and discussed provisions for humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, Reuters reported.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Twitter that the UK will give 50 million pound to help Afghans who are at risk.

“The UK will give £50m to that end, and I urge the G20 to prioritize the rights of women and girls in all our international development efforts,”  he added.

“It will mainly focus on climate change but they will also discuss the concerns regarding Afghanistan,” said Aziz Marij, a former diplomat.

The UN earlier called on the G20 members to focus attention on the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

Zabiullah Mujahid, deputy minister of information and culture, said the Islamic Emirate sent a message to the G20 conference that Afghanistan was not a threat to any country. “We have asked them to take steps to recognize Afghanistan,” he said.

The G20 members discussed climate change, the economy and the Covid-19 outbreak.
