Blinken: Ghani Ruined Opportunity to Form Inclusive Govt

US Secretary Antony Blinken said that the US had pressed President Ghani to get ready for the plan to transfer power to a new government that would have been led by the Taliban.

In an interview with CBS News, the secretary said that President Ghani promised him to fulfil the plan or continue to fight to the death, if the Taliban would not go along, but Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan the next day.

“I was on the phone with- with President Ghani on a Saturday night, pressing him to make sure he was ready to agree with the plan we were trying to put into effect -- to do a transfer of power to- to a new government that would have been led by the Taliban, but then inclusive and included all aspects of Afghan society. And he told me on the phone he was prepared to do that, but if the Taliban wouldn't go along, he was ready to fight to the death. And the very next day, he fled Afghanistan,” said Blinken.

He further said that President Biden intended to make sure that another generation of Americans would not have to fight and die in Afghanistan, so he ended the America’s longest war in the country.

Despite American officials constantly claiming that the US reached goals in Afghanistan, several Afghan political experts said that the US failed to reach its goals in the country so the US left.

“The US failed to access whatever the country was after in Afghanistan, and now it is claiming victory to avoid blame by its nation,” said Ahmad Khan Andar, an international relations expert.

“The country would not face such a situation, if the President did not flee Afghanistan. In fact, Afghan people took the loss” said Sayed Akbar Agha, the Head of Rah-e-Nejat Council of Afghanistan.

The former US special envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad said some days ago that Afghan elites’ selfishness and corruption led to the failure of political transformation in Afghanistan.
