Islamic Emirate Officials Stress Need to Facilitate Female Education

Some officials of the Islamic Emirate in an academic gathering emphasized the need to facilitate girls' and women’s access to education and work within Sharia-frameworks.

Speaking at an event titled “women’s role” held by the Academy of Science of Afghanistan, the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, said that the existence of the constitution is important for the country.

“Justice should be ensured. The government should reopen the doors of the schools for everyone. The government should have a constitution and run its affairs based on it. The people should give consultations to the government officials,” Stanikzai said.

He also called for women and girls' access to work and education based on Sharia law.

“Women should take part in various parts of the society based on Sharia. We want freedom for women based on Sharia, not based on Western culture. The rights of girls should be provided completely and the ground for work and education for women be provided,” he said.

Abdul Baqi Haqqani, head of the National Examination Authority, also criticized the lack of women’s access to education and work.

“The problems should be solved. The government can be preserved through universities not through seminaries. The universities should become standard. The rights of women to education should be provided,” he said. “Women can work in various aspects, and if we cannot provide the grounds for it, it is our failure.”

“One of the reasons the prophet (PBUH) married many women was to increase the number of women teachers,” said Sheikh Fazaluddin Mahmood, head of the Academy of Science.

Since the Islamic Emirate swept into power, there have been various opinions among government officials about the education and work of women.
