Russia, Uzbekistan Leaders Discuss Afghanistan Peace and Stability

Russia and Uzbekistan will continue to make efforts toward stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan, the Kremlin said in a statement following talks between the two countries' leaders.

According to the statement, the UN should play the main coordinating role in international cooperation with Afghanistan, including on issues of the country’s economic recovery and efforts to improve the welfare of its people.

"Priority will be given to achieving peace and stability in Afghanistan, which fully meets the interests of security and development of Central Asia and neighboring regions. The UN should play the main coordinating role in international cooperation with Afghanistan, including on issues of restoring the economy of this state and improving the well-being of its population," the statement reads.

Some political analysts consider the role of Moscow and Tashkent important in resolving the current challenges of Afghanistan.

"The concern of these countries about the situation in Afghanistan is because the security of Afghanistan is connected with the security of these countries and the deterioration of the situation affects these countries," said Sayed Javad Sajadi, university lecturer.

"Russia can be a great help in the Afghanistan issue, but its performance in the last two years has been through the lens of its conflict with America," said Tariq Farhadi, a political analyst.

However, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid asked the leaders of Russia and Uzbekistan to interact with the current government instead of worrying about ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Mujahid said the country's peace and stability are now ensured.

"Security is guaranteed. Here, there is stability and one government, the people receive services, and the government's obligations are upheld. It is better for countries to interact with the Islamic Emirate. They should directly discuss with us the issues they raise,” the spokesman added.

Following the reestablishment of the Islamic Emirate in the nation, Moscow and Tashkent have constantly asked the Islamic Emirate to fight terrorist groups, create an inclusive government, respect minorities, and adhere to legal and international laws.
