Uzbekistan Delegates to Visit Afghanistan, Discuss Qosh Tepa Canal

Uzbekistani media reported that a governmental delegation is expected to visit Afghanistan by the end of this year to discuss the Qosh Tepa canal—a water canal launched in Afghanistan to channel water from the Amu River to other parts of the country.

The governor of Surkhandarya region, Ulugbek Kosimov, was quoted in the report as saying that despite the canal being built from a point on Afghanistan's border with Tajikistan, it would have an impact on all countries of the river basin.

"So far they [Afghanistan] have not opened the canal... Construction work ... has not been completed. However, whether you like it or not, there will be an impact on [the volume of water available to the Central Asian countries], there will be a reduction. This development will also require large funds… Before that, the issue will be considered at the government level," Kosimov said.

The Islamic Emirate’s officials earlier said that Afghanistan respects the rights of all neighboring countries from the Amu River and that they should not be worried.
