Water From Shah-wa-Aros Dam to Supply Kabul: Minister

The acting Minister of Energy and Water (MoEW), Abdul Latif Mansour, said that sufficient water has been stored at the Shah-wa-Aros water dam to be channeled to Kabul for the needs of the residents.

In an interview with TOLOnews, Mansour said that if the water management company transfers the water, it will meet the needs of 20,000 families in Kabul.

"We have completed the Shah-wa-Aros dam and the water is stored there now. If the water management company pays attention, it can transfer the water from there, and can meet the needs of 20,000 families," he said.

He also said that the plan for transferring water from Panjshir to Kabul has been finalized and that negotiations took place with the national and foreign investors to invest in the project.

Mansour also said that negotiations over starting work on the Shahtoot water project are underway with a foreign investors company.

"The design for the Panjshir water project has been completed. Some of the investors are national and some are foreigners,” he said.

The economists believe that beginning work on the infrastructure projects including water dams will benefit the country’s economy.

"We can produce energy from internal sources in Afghanistan. In addition to it, we can manage our water. We can use it both for agriculture and also drinking water," said Naseer Ahmad Rishtia, an economist.

The acting Minister of Energy and Water meanwhile pledged that Kabul residents will not face famine as Afghanistan has many water sources.
