In his meeting with the Special Coordinator of the United Nations for Afghanistan, Feridun Sinirlioğlu, acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, stressed that the appointment of a UN special envoy for the situation of Afghanistan is “unnecessary”, according to a Islamic Emirate’s spokesman.

Muttaqi met with Sinirlioğlu on Monday, where he discussed the holding of the Doha meeting about Afghanistan, Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi posted on X on Monday.

He also quoted Sinirlioğlu as saying that the purpose of holding the Doha meeting is to establish the interaction of the international community through a sustainable process so that Afghanistan achieves more political progress.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, said: “He promised to help with Afghanistan. The focus was on the Doha conference and that the Islamic Emirate should make its decision whether to attend the conference or not? The acting Foreign Minister asked him about the agenda and issues being discussed there.”

“Sinirlioğlu might have discussed with the Islamic Emirate’s officials the issues of denial of special envoy by the Islamic Emirate,” said Samiullah Ahmadzai, political analyst.

The Chargé d'Affaires of the Afghanistan Permanent Mission to the UN, Naseer Ahmad Faiq, said that the special envoy for Afghanistan will be appointed with the agreement of the Doha meeting.

“One of the agendas of the conference will be discussion about the appointment of the special envoy. I don’t think the Secretary General will appoint its special envoy,” he said.

This comes as the Doha meeting is due to be held on February 18-19.

After meeting with various dimensions of Afghanistan and the region, Sinirlioğlu prepared an assessment of the situation of Afghanistan, in which he recommended a roadmap for reintegration of Afghanistan into the international community.
