Faiq: Sinirlioğlu's Mission 'Successful'

The Special Coordinator and Independent Assessor of the UN for Afghanistan Feridun Hadi Sinirlioğlu’s mission ended in February of 2024.

The Chargé d'Affaires of the Afghanistan Permanent Mission to the UN, Naseer Ahmad Faiq, said the employment of Feridun Hadi Sinirlioğlu was successful and that his independent assessment of the situation of Afghanistan is the focus of all international meetings on Afghanistan.

Faiq said that the assessment is considered a document for reaching international consensus, to receive a coherent and coordinated approach for the interaction of the international community with the Taliban, and to deal with crises in Afghanistan.

“Even though there may be some shortcomings in the report and there are several criticisms from different groups of women and different groups of Afghan people regarding the points and some issues mentioned in the report; overall their mission was successful,” Faiq told TOLOnews.

Emphasizing the reality in the reports about Afghanistan, the Islamic Emirate says that the information of the Feridun Hadi Sinirlioğlu was somewhat good and that some points of the independent assessment were not acceptable to the Islamic Emirate.

“We should say that his report was somewhat good, But some points were not acceptable to us, and they suggested that a special representative for Afghanistan be appointed by the United Nations, which turned out to be unnecessary from our side,” said Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the Islamic Emirate.

“The appointment of a representative for Afghanistan is based on the resolution of the Security Council, which means that the Taliban cannot prevent it, and whether the Taliban wants it or not, the representative will be appointed, and his duty will be to create a new understanding between the world and the Emirate,” said Wahid Faqiri, a political analyst.

Feridun Sinirlioğlu of Türkiye who has also worked as the Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the United Nations from 2016 to 2023, was appointed to lead an independent assessment to provide recommendations for addressing challenges faced by Afghanistan based on the resolution 2627.
