UNHRC to Review Human Rights Situation in Afghanistan

The United Nations Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review Working Group is set to review human rights reports from Afghanistan in less than four days.

According to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Afghanistan is one of 14 countries whose human rights situation is being reviewed by this working group.

The United Nations Human Rights Council session will be held on April 29.

"The Islamic Emirate must strive as soon as possible to open the gates of schools and universities to our sisters so that we can have a bright and good future," Zakiullah Mohammadi, a university scholar, told TOLOnews.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International also reported a dire human rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly the rights of women and girls, and called for the urgent abolition of restrictions imposed on women in the country.

"In current Afghanistan, we are witnessing a culture of impunity under Taliban rule, and within this culture of impunity, we are witnessing widespread human rights violations," Zaman Sultani, a South Asia researcher at Amnesty International, told TOLOnews.

This is while the Islamic Emirate once again emphasized that the rights of women in Afghanistan are secured within the framework of Islamic laws.

Hamdullah Fetrat, the deputy spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, told TOLOnews: "The Islamic Emirate, as a regime, is committed to providing the Islamic and Sharia rights to the citizens of the country. The Western world wants to ensure Western rights in the country, which in reality is an attempt to impose Western culture."

Earlier, a number of countries including the United States called for the lifting of bans against women in Afghanistan and stated that if women's rights are not observed, “the Taliban” will not be recognized.
