Afghans on Mosque Attack: 'Security Too Weak'

A powerful explosion went off at Sher Shah Suri Mosque in the Kart-e-Char area in the west of Kabul, the second attack in ten days in the nation’s capital on a mosque as residents gathered for the Friday prayer.

Among the four killed was the imam of the mosque, Azizullah Mofleh, according to the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

The explosives were placed inside the mosque, the ministry said.

Footage from inside the mosque on social media shows chaos and smoke, and the wounded lying on the ground.

Friday's explosion follows an IED blast in Wazir Akbar Khan Mosque in downtown Kabul that occurred on June 2 in which the imam of the mosque, Mohammad Ayaz Niazi, was killed.

Eyewitnesses speak about ordeal:

“I was coming from the other side and suddenly I heard a dangerous explosion. We rushed inside to help the wounded people and I saw Maulavi lying there,” said Jawed, a resident in the vicinity.

Some residents meanwhile accused the Afghan security and intelligence agencies for failing to thwart such attacks.

“Where are the security measures? They killed the entire Ulema,” said Haji Rezwan, a resident in Kabul.

“It is shameful for you Ashraf Ghani. I live in Kart-e-Char, come and execute me,” said a resident in Kabul, named Ali.

“Despite their receiving huge amounts of money for intelligence activities, they do nothing to provide security to the people,” said Abdullah, a resident in Kabul.

Afghans across the country have denounced these attacks on the mosques as against Islamic teachings.
