Obama Urges Candidates to Conclude National Unity Govt Deal

U.S. President Barack Obama has urged the two Afghan presidential candidates, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, to conclude a deal on the national unity government "as soon as possible," a White House statement announced on Sunday.

According to the statement, in phone conversations with Abdullah and Ghani on Saturday, Obama stressed that the formation of a national unity government is "in the interest of shoring up international support for Afghanistan and preserving Afghan stability."

"The President reaffirmed the United States' commitment to support Afghanistan, its people, and the president and chief executive, should the agreement be formalized, in their efforts to form a new unity government," the statement added.

This is while on the same day, in a meeting with the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Palace in Kabul, President Hamid Karzai asked the presidential candidates to create a national unity government and end all confusion, the president's office announced in a statement. The president added that the national unity government does not need an opposition.

"If the political talks go well and the unity government is formed, we will all work together and cooperate with the government," the statement quoted Karzai.

Foreign Minister Steinmeier emphasized that Afghan politicians should use "the historic opportunity to create a democratic transition of power," adding that the German government has pledged to support the formation of a new government as long as "both sides feel obliged to participate." Steinmeier also met with the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, Ján Kubiš, along with German election observers.

Nearly three months after the run-off election, the final results and the negotiations between presidential candidates, Abdullah and Ghani, have reached no conclusions. The Independent Election Commission (IEC) maintains that the delay in announcing the final results has no link to the talks between the presidential candidates. IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor stated that the delay in announcing the final results is due to technicalities, maintaining that the election process is moving forward as normal.

The IEC has said that the audit process has been completed and that the final election results will be announced shortly.
