US Funds Wastewater Treatment Facility at Pul-e-Charkhi Prison

US Ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass and Minister of Interior Wais Ahmad Barmak on Monday inaugurated the new sewage system at Pul-e-Charkhi prison in Kabul.

The cost of the project was an estimated $10 million USD which was funded by the US.

Bass said that with the implementation of the project, health and security of the prison will improve.

“This pioneering project represents another milestone in the 12-year partnership between the United States and Afghanistan to improve correctional facilities,” said Bass.

“We remain committed to assisting the Afghan government in progress toward maintaining safe, secure, and modern correctional programs,” he added.

Meanwhile, the minister of interior said government is trying to bring about reforms in Pul-e-Charkhi prison.

“We have outlined a four-year plan to bring reforms to the leadership and management system of all prisons and detention centers of Afghanistan,” said Barmak.

Bass said the completion of the year-long project will provide essential sewage treatment for more than 14,000 inmates at the prison.
