Fifth Auction Held for Panjshir Emeralds: Ministry

The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum said in a statement that for the fifth time it held an auction for emeralds from Panjshir, selling 2,059 carats of emeralds extracted from Panjshir mines.

The ministry has sold 2,059 carats of emeralds extracted from Panjshir worth $117,700 US dollars, with "transparent" bidding.

The Chamber of Commerce and Investment considers the legalization of Panjshir emerald extraction beneficial in the development of the country's economy.

The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum says that more than $1.5 million has been obtained in five rounds of extraction and sales of emeralds in Panjshir province.

The spokesperson of this ministry said that hundreds of residents of Panjshir province are currently working legally in the extraction of emerald mines in this province.

“So far, five tenders or auctions have been held, and in yesterday's tender, approximately 2,059 carats of extracted emeralds were sold at a price of 117,700 US dollars through open bidding,” said Hamayon Afghan, the spokesman of the ministry.

At the same time, the chamber of commerce and investment, referring to the work provided for the residents of Panjshir province, said the legal extraction of emeralds is beneficial in the growth of the country's economy.

“The fact that this process is subject to the law is a very important issue, and another issue is how we can technically extract the Panjshir emerald. This is very important,” said Mohammad Yunus Momand, first deputy of the ACCI.

Some analysts, referring to the good market of precious stones, believe that the expansion of standard extraction of precious stones such as emeralds in the country's mines can bring positive changes in the development of the country's economy.

“A mechanism should be properly arranged and the process of extraction should continue and these precious stones can have positive effects on the future of Afghanistan's economy,” said Shams-Ur-Rahman Ahmadzai, an economic analyst.

Based on the statistics of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, 1,200 emerald mines have been identified in Panjshir province, and domestic companies have been allowed to mine over 400 mines in this province.

The ministry emphasized that the process of extracting emerald mines is strictly monitored by the officials of this ministry.
