Annual Media Awards Festival Held in Kabul

The Afghanistan Independent Journalist Association (AIJA) held the Best Media Award Festival of 1402 today in Kabul.

Hujatullah Mujadidi, head of the Afghan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA), at the festival, said that there is "always a critical view of the media from the side of governments." Still, the media in Afghanistan is moving towards becoming professional, he said.

Hujatullah Mujadidi also said that award is given to the media based on the professional standards of journalism.

“There has always been a view of the governments towards journalists and the media community, sometimes the media community is viewed critically,” he added.

"In many cases, journalists have been detained without reason, or, if the reason is clear, it is not necessary to arrest the journalist, it should be coordinated with the commission and the ministry," said Abdul Qayoom Wiar, head of the Afghan Journalist Safety Committee.

Several Journalists and media officials in the ceremony said that over two years after the resumption of the Islamic Emirate, the law of access to information is not approved yet which has slowed down the work of the media in the country.

They emphasized that in case of violations by journalists, the Media Violation Commission should deal with it.

“The pressure on the domestic media raises and strengthens the foreign media. Let's not do this. They publish reports against the current situation and pursue foreign goals,” said Zabihullah Sadat, the director of TOLOnews.

“There is a problem in accessing information and the problem is slightly solved. We want this issue to be considered, justification about the law should be given where its work has reached,” said Mujib Rahman Baheer, the director of ATN news.

Meanwhile, some officials who attended the ceremony said that the support of media is the priority of the Islamic Emirate.

Naimul Haq Haqqani, head of the Government Media and Information Center, said at the ceremony that a commission to facilitate the return of journalists to the country is supposed to be formed shortly.

“A commission like the Contact Commission was created for prominent figures, it should be created for media figures so that they can be invited and come to Afghanistan and judge Afghanistan from their own eyes,” he added.

“The problems have been almost solved, and each event and violation that occurs by any institution, it’s shared with the leadership,” said Abdul Wahid Arian, the head of broadcast of the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Based on the statistics of the officials, about 360 journalists and media anchors from all over the country applied for the award, and 21 people including five female anchors and reporters won the award of the year.
