Afghan Schools Reopen, But Not for Girls Over Grade 6

As the new school year begins, the Ministry of Education said that until further notice, the doors of schools will be closed to girls beyond the sixth grade.

Officials at the Ministry of Education, as the 1401 solar school year begins, said boys can continue their education as normal.

“The Ministry of Education once again assures our nation that it is fully committed to providing the educational rights of all our compatriots. In order to generalize and standardize the quality of education ...” said Aziz Ahmad Rayan, director of publications and communications at the Ministry of Education.

Rayan said that for now girls’ schools beyond grade six will remain closed and the leadership of the Islamic Emirate will make a final decision on this.

When the previous government was in power, various government officials would come out to celebrate the first day of the school year, but this year the presence of government officials was low.

However, the Department of Education held a ceremony to mark the beginning of the new school year.

“We are educated people, the teachers are obliged to convey their understanding to the students within the framework of Sharia,” said Abdulhaq Haqqani, Kabul's director of education.

Those students who have been allowed to go to school are happy.

“We ask the government to pay attention to our teachers, in terms of their salaries and education,” said Ali Sina, a student.

“They should open girls' schools as well, because they will drop out of school. Education makes a country prosperous,” said Sohrab, another student.

Officials at the Ministry of Education at the ceremony for the start of the 1401 solar school year, did not specify the date for the reopening of schools for female students beyond the sixth grade, but said that boys can continue their education as normal.

The reopening ceremony of the schools was held at Amani High School in Kabul this year, like last year.
