The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said that over 270,000 Afghan refugees over the past six months--at least 100,000 lacking legal documents--were deported.
A spokesman for the ministry, Abdul Mutalib Haqqani, said between 2,000 to 3,000 refugees return via the Islam Qala and Milat gate every day.
"Over the past six months, nearly 270,000 Afghans have returned to the country and 100,000 of them are those Afghans who have been forcefully deported," he said.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said on Twitter that the UNHCR is committed to supporting returnee refugees and internally displaced Afghans rebuild their lives and strengthen community resilience.
The people who have returned to the country said poverty was the main reason for the legal and illegal migration.
"I went to Turkey two months ago, the Iranian police captured us on the Turkish border and brought us back to Tehran and from there to Herat," said a returnee.
"I call on the government to help us. There is no work here, the people are forced to leave," said Abdul Naseer, a returnee.
Earlier, the embassy of Iran in Kabul said that over six million Afghan refugees--two million lacking legal documents--are living in Afghanistan.
