Iran Interior Minister Says Helmand Water Treaty is Priority Issue

The Interior Minister of Iran, Ahmad Wahidi, said that the issue of the Helmand water treaty is the top priority issue for his country.

Speaking at a press conference, Wahidi called on the officials of the interim Afghan government to remain committed to their pledges.

Earlier, Ali Akbar Mehrabian, Iran's minister of energy, said that Tehran will take all necessary steps to ensure its water rights.

This comes as political analysts suggested that the issue of the Helmand water treaty should be solved via negotiations.

“There is a dam. The people of Afghanistan have the first rights to the dam to use its water. There should also be negotiations again about the water rights of Iran,” said Janat Fahim Chakari, a political analyst.

“I hope the Iran government doesn’t take the issue of water rights as an excuse to cause a condition that affects the relations of the two countries; the issue of water rights can be solved based on the water treaty of 1973,” said Ahmad Khan Andar, political analyst.

The Islamic Emirate officials said that due to existing droughts, Afghanistan is unable to provide enough water to Iran.
