Over 280 Schools Damaged Due to Recent Earthquakes in Herat

The Herat Education Department has reported that over 280 schools have been damaged in the earthquakes that struck the province in recent months.

Officials state that many of these schools are now unusable and require reconstruction.

Rahmatullah Jabir, the head of the Herat Education Department, mentioned that in the past few months, more than eighty schools damaged in the earthquake-hit villages have been rebuilt by international organizations and the government.

Jabir stated, "Around 400 schools need repair, out of which approximately 286 schools were closed due to the impact of the recent earthquakes."

Most classrooms in these schools sustained serious damage during the destructive earthquakes about seven months ago. Due to the destruction and the potential risk of the school buildings collapsing, teaching activities in these classrooms have been suspended.

Several students in Herat have expressed that due to the destruction of their schools, they have been forced to study in open spaces.

Marwa Nouri, a student, expressed, "When we go into the classroom, we are very afraid that something might fall on us, and our school is completely destroyed, so we are unable to study."

Another student, Ayesha Qasemi, said, "Our school should be repaired so that we can continue our studies and our school is not broken."

According to some teachers, the absence of standard classrooms and a peaceful educational environment adversely affects the teaching process.

Mohammad Ismail Firouz, a teacher, mentioned, "If children are constantly worried that the classroom might collapse, proper education cannot take place."

Ahmad Farhad Rafahi, another teacher, stated, "People are hesitant to send their children to school because if they do and an earthquake occurs, the school will completely collapse."

Based on statistics from the Herat Education Department, over 1,400 schools are currently active in the province. Some of these schools lack buildings, and students are studying in cold or hot weather, under tents, or in open spaces.
