President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday granted Afghan citizenship to Alberto Cairo, an Italian physiotherapist and head of the orthopedics centers of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to honor his services in Afghanistan, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.
Ghani said Cairo in his long-term mission in Afghanistan did a lot for the Afghan people, especially the war victims and helped them to recover from the injuries and damages they sustained during conflicts.
Mr. Cairo is known for his work in treating Afghan amputees.
Ghani said that Mr. Cairo has tirelessly served in Afghanistan for the past 28 years.
