A military operation has been launched in the volatile district of Gereshk in Helmand province to retake some areas fallen to the Taliban two years ago, army officials said Friday.

The Afghan Air Force are supporting the military operation from air, the officials said.

“We have planned to launch military operations in most of Helmand’s districts and all our operations will be backed by the Air Force,” said Colonel Hussamuddin, Executive Officer of the 3rd Regiment of 215 Maiwand Corps.

“We have not launched such an operation in the past three years. In anywhere that they (Taliban) fire, the helicopters bomb those areas and this is a big success in our mission,” said Nematullah, an army officer in Helmand.

Meanwhile, Gereshk district police Chief Mohammad Ismail Khpulwak said that after two years, they have cleared an insecure region of Taliban.

“This area was out of our control for a long time and today we retook it. We will continue such military operations,” he said.
