Doctors in Kabul at an event marking World Diabetes Day, attended by representatives of the World Health Organization and officials of the Ministry of Public Health, emphasized the need for facilities for diabetes treatment in the country.

The doctors of Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital said that due to the lack of insulin, the number of deaths from the disease has increased in the country.

“Our main problem is the lack of medicine, especially insulin, which is a very serious problem for us, and we have suggested this several times through the Department of Foreign Relations of the Ministry,” said Hassibullah Mohammadi, head of the diabetes department in Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital.

At the same time, the representative of the World Health Organization assured the continuation of the assistance of the organization in the health sector.

"On behalf of the World Health Organization, we assure again that we cooperate with the Ministry of Public Health, we provide technical cooperation in controlling diabetes and equalizing the provision of services for this disease,” said Nayeemullah Safi, a representative of WHO.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health said that in 2022, more than a thousand people have died from this disease in the country.

“In 2022, about 17,409 people were affected by this disease, of which more than 1,000 people died, and the number of people who have recently been affected by this disease has increased,” said Hassibullah Akhundzada.

The level of awareness of our people is very low compared to the people of the world about this disease unfortunately,” said Wali Naseeri, the head of the Afghan Endocrinology Association.

According to the representative of the World Health Organization in the world, one out of two people suffering from diabetes is not aware of this disease and two million people die from this disease every year around the world.
