Brazil recorded 42,725 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours as well as 1,185 new deaths resulting from the disease, the country’s Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

Brazil has registered nearly 1.2 million cases since the pandemic began, while cumulative deaths total 53,830, according to the ministry.

The United Arab Emirates’ government has lifted its coronavirus-related curfew, it posted on Twitter on Wednesday.

“All members of society are allowed to freely enter and exit throughout the day without restrictions,” it said in an announcement also tweeted by the country’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority.

China’s health authority reported on Thursday 19 new coronavirus cases in the mainland for June 24, up from 12 a day earlier.

Of the new infections, 13 were in Beijing, the National Health Commission said, compared with seven cases a day earlier.

As of June 24, mainland China had a total of 83,449 confirmed cases.

The number of people who died from coronavirus infection in France rose by 11 to 29,731 on Wednesday, down sharply versus Tuesday when the weekly data for nursing homes were included.

That is the lowest increase in COVID-19 fatalities in five days. France’s death toll is the fifth-highest in the world.

Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra threatened on Wednesday to temporarily take over the country’s private healthcare clinics if they failed to strike a deal with the government in 48 hours over fees for treating coronavirus patients.

Private clinics have for three weeks wrangled with Vizcarra’s government over a fair rate for care. The haggling began amid reports of overcharging for the sickest patients who require mechanical ventilators and intensive care.

“We cannot wait indefinitely,” said Vizcarra in a televised speech together with his cabinet of ministers. “With the law and the Constitution on our side we can do it.”

Vizcarra said he would invoke an article in the constitution that allows the government to expropriate private property for national security purposes. The constitution requires “just compensation” for any such takings.

Any takeover would last only as long as the pandemic, he added.

Vizcarra’s ultimatum comes more than 100 days after his government declared a national lockdown to curb the outbreak. The crisis has hammered the country’s economy and brought its healthcare system to the brink of collapse.

Peru’s association of private health care clinics did not immediately respond to Vizcarra’s comments. But the group said in a statement Tuesday the process had been delayed only by legal and administration hang-ups.

Peru has confirmed 264,689 cases of coronavirus and 8,586 deaths. The Andean country’s outbreak is second only to Brazil in Latin America, and the seventh largest worldwide, according to a Reuters count.
