Trump Calls For Death Penalty For Uzbek Attacker

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the death penalty for an Uzbek immigrant accused of plowing a truck down a New York City bike path, killing eight people, Reuters reported.

Trump tweeted: “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS (Daesh) flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!”

Sayfullo Saipov, the 29-year-old suspect was hospitalized after being shot by police as he tried to flee the scene after Tuesday’s attack. Reuters reported he told investigators he had been inspired by watching Daesh videos and began planning Tuesday’s attack a year ago.

Saipov was charged with one count of providing material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization, specifically Daesh, and one count of violence and destruction of motor vehicles causing the deaths of eight people.

Reuters reported that the 10-page charging document notes that Saipov confessed to authorities that he made a trial run on October 22. The document also stated he had asked permission to hang the Daesh flag in his hospital room.

The document stated he was particularly motivated by seeing a video in which Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi called on Muslims in the United States and elsewhere to support the group’s cause.

Reuters reported that investigators found thousands of Daesh-related propaganda images and videos on a cellphone belonging to Saipov, including video clips showing Daesh prisoners being beheaded, run over by a tank and shot in the face.

Reuters also reported the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it had located another Uzbek man, Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, 32, wanted for questioning as a person of interest in the attack.
