Iran Calls on Intl Community to Prevent Afghan Migrants

The Interior Ministry of Iran warned the international community that if the economic problems of Afghanistan are not solved, the world will see another wave of migrants.

Ahmad Wahidi, Iran's interior minister, said that the freezing of Afghan assets and the lack of humanitarian aid are the main reason for triggering a new wave of migrants.

“If these migrants don’t stay in Iran, where will they go?” he said.  “They will go to the borders. We have returned some people from the border with Turkey.”

The Islamic Emirate called on the neighboring country Iran to treat the Afghan refugees with proper behavior.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran accepted the Afghan refugees in the past. We hope that they now also show flexibility towards the migrants” said Zabiullah Mujahid, the deputy minister of information and culture.

Hundreds of Afghans illegally cross the border between Iran and Afghanistan on a daily basis.

“The detention of the Afghan migrants has recently surged. A top Iranian official announced that Iran has no more capacity for foreign migrants,” said Mohammad Wali Akbari, an Afghan refugee in Iran.

“After the change of the government, we are seeing another wave of migrants who seek to cross the border via an illegal way and reach Iran,” said Asifa Stanikzai, an Afghan refugee activist.

Iran officials expressed concerns over another wave of migrants to the country as Iran has already hosted hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees.
