Islamic Emirate’s Reaction to Fighting in Spin Boldak

The Defense Ministry in a statement on Thursday blamed Pakistani forces for the shelling in Spin Boldak district in Kandahar and reiterated that dialogue is a reasonable solution to any problem.

"The Islamic Emirate considers dialogue a reasonable solution to any problem. Negative acts and making excuses for fighting are not in the interests of any side,” said Enayatullah Khwarazmi, the Defense Ministry spokesperson.

On Thursday, the clashes happened for the second time in a week between the Islamic Emirate’s forces and the Pakistani military alongside the Durand Line in Spin Boldak areas of southern Kandahar province.

Pakistan's foreign ministry stated it called in the Afghan chargé d’affaires in Islamabad, Sardar Ahmad Shikib, to express "strong condemnation" of the shelling in the Chaman-Spin Boldak area that resulted in “loss of life, injuries and damages to property.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s MoFA said it has called in the Afghan chargé d’affaires on this issue.

“It was reiterated that protection of civilians remained the responsibility of both sides and that recurrence of these incidents must be prevented,” the statement reads. “It was agreed to use established institutional mechanisms in this regard.”

The residents of both sides of the Durand Line call on the two sides to avoid tensions.

“Passengers are commuting through this path. They are very tired. They are being taken to Quetta ... They are facing a lot of problems here. We call for the end of this conflict and fighting,” said Wais, a resident of Chaman.

“On Sunday, the Islamic Emirate and Pakistani forces engaged in fighting which caused civilian casualties. In the clashes of Sunday, eight people were killed and 37 others were wounded,” said Ahmad Zahir, a resident of Chaman.

Military veterans blamed the Pakistan border forces for rising tensions in Spin Boldak, saying that the continuation of tensions would create further distance between the two countries.

“The reason for the clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan are due to the mistakes  always made by Pakistan. They came forward several kilometers toward Afghan soil during the governments of Ashraf Ghani and Hamid Karzai, and they were able then to erect the fencing,” said Sarwar Niazai, a political analyst.

“If these clashes intensify, it will require the two countries to sit down again and restart their assessment,” said Janat Fahim Chakari, a political analyst.
