Aziz Barred From Visiting Golden Temple, Speaking To Media

Pakistan media reported that its prime minister’s foreign affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz was barred from visiting the Golden Temple and from speaking to the media at the hotel during his stay in India.

Aziz had been in Amritsar for Sunday's Heart of Asia Conference.

According to reports he was also prevented from visiting the Golden Temple. India cited security considerations as the reason.

According to the Indian Express there had been a "tiff" between Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit and security personnel at the hotel after they denied Pakistani journalists entry to the venue.

After security personnel denied permission for Aziz’s interaction with the Pakistani media at the conference venue, the Pakistani High Commission reportedly planned the interaction at another hotel but that too was not allowed, Pakistani High Commission sources said.

The Hindustan Times quoted Aziz as saying: “The attitude towards the media was not good. I wanted to have press interaction with our own media. But we were not allowed.”

The de facto foreign minister did however address delegates at the conference earlier in the day where he said Pakistan was aware Afghanistan continues to face many serious challenges.

"The first and foremost in our view is continuing violence and acts of terrorism claiming scores of human lives. This needs to be addressed urgently and effectively through collective efforts."

He said the security situation in Afghanistan is very complex. "It is simplistic to blame only one country for the recent upsurge in violence. We need to have an objective and holistic view," he added.

"We need to make an objective evaluation of our efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan. We appreciate progress in many areas under the leadership of President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah."

He also stated that the Afghan security forces have firmly and bravely stood their ground in repulsing militant and terrorist attacks and that "the government and people of Pakistan stand in complete solidarity with the elected government and people of Afghanistan in furthering the objective of peace, stability and development in Afghanistan."

"We would do whatever we can to help achieve this objective," he said.

Aziz also stated that Pakistan is committed to enhancing facilitation for transit of Afghan goods through Pakistan.

"We believe the two sides need to work together for extension of and improvements in the Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA). In this context, let me emphasize that peaceful resolution of outstanding disputes will further improve prospects of regional cooperation and connectivity."

Earlier in the day Ghani and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the 6th Heart of Asia ministerial conference that was attended by 40 countries and dozens of international organizations.

On Saturday night, Ghani and Modi visited the Golden Temple. Their visit was followed by a dinner.
