Torkham Crossing Closed Again on Pakistan Side After Reopening for One Hour

Torkham crossing was closed for passengers and commercial transit on Thursday by Pakistan, an hour after its reopening, said Qureshi Badlon, an official of the department of information and culture in Nangarhar.

According to local officials in Nangarhar, the reason for the closing of this crossing is not clear, although attempts are being made to find a solution.

"This gate was opened once again by the local Islamic Emirate officials around nine in the morning, but sadly it was closed again by the Pakistani side," Badlon told TOLOnews.

The Torkham crossing's four-day closure has cost traders millions of afghani, according to the officials of the Nangarhar Chamber of Commerce and Investment and customs officials, and if the situation continues, traders will suffer significant financial losses.

“If it continues for a long time, it will have a negative effect,” said Shukrullah Safi, spokesman of the Nangarhar Chamber of Commerce and Investment.

“400 cars used to pass through this gate, but now it has been stopped. The traders have suffered millions of afghanis or dollars,” said Abdul Haq Hamid, deputy of the Nangarhar customs.

Many drivers said that fruits and vegetables on either side of the crossing are at risk of spoiling, and they asked both sides not to block this transit route for reasons of politics and security.

"There are vehicles with pomegranates in them, but the vehicles have stopped. About 100 to 200 cars loaded with pomegranates have stopped and everything will be wasted,” said Farmanullah, a driver.

"The drivers have problems, and they eat at restaurants. They loaded the car full of fruit, and that fruit will spoil,” said Shahab, a driver.

Pakistan closed the Torkham crossing after a delegation led by the country's defense minister visited Kabul and discussed several issues, including border challenges, with Islamic Emirate officials.
