IOM Reports Major Internal Displacement in Afghanistan

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the number of people who are internally displaced in Afghanistan is 5.5 million.

According to a report by the UN's OSHA, more than 500,592 were displaced in the last eight months.

850,805 undocumented Afghans have returned from Iran and Pakistan during the last eight months, said IOM.

Amanullah, a Takhar resident, wanted to go Iran from Nimroz province. He said: “I left my house eight days ago and spent six days near the Iran border. There are more than three thousand women, men and children. They are in a very bad condition.”

Meanwhile, several residents speaking to TOLOnews said they are fleeing Afghanistan due to famine, poverty and a lack of work opportunity.

Sayed Wali, a Badakhshan resident said: “I do not like to flee, but I have to go. I leave my country to help my family.”

In recent days, many other displaced people have come to Kabul and are in dire need of help.

Ehsanullah, from Zabul province, said: “They have families and children. They need help.”

The Taliban government's Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation is attempting to prevent illegal migration: “We ask them to stay in the country. Afghanistan is secure now.  Finding opportunities for work, and commerce, will focused on in the future,” said Arsalan Kharuti, the ministry coordinator.
