Afghanistan’s National Cricket Team defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets, in its third consecutive victory of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 after securing two wins against former champion England and 1992 World Cup winner Pakistan.
Team Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field first. Sri Lanka put a total of 242 runs target for Afghanistan while losing all wickets at 50th over.
Afghan left-arm fast-medium bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi was named player of the match with taking 4 wickets for 34 runs.
For Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran opened batting with Gurbaz losing its wicket at first over to Sri Lankan Dilshan Madushanka.
Ibrahim scored 39 runs off 57 balls. However, Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, Rahmat Shan and Azmatullah Omarzai each made half century.
Shah scored 62 runs off 74 balls, Omarzai scored 73 runs off 63 balls and Shahidi scored 58 runs off 74 balls.
Shahidi also reached his 2,000 runs in the ODI international.
The match was held in Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, Maharashtra, India.
Afghanistan defeated England by 69 runs and Pakistan by 8 wickets.
