Students Call on Government to Reopen Girls' Schools in Badakhshan

Female students in Badakhshan called on Islamic Emirate to reopen the doors of schools for girls above grade six.

The students said that to avoid depression they have joined private courses.

“Every child and every girl has the right to learn education,” said Arezo, a tenth-class student.

“We are not able financially to join private classes and it has been one year that our schools have been closed, and we are depressed about this situation,” said Sedra, a seventh-grade student.

Some civil society activists, scholars and other residents of Badakhshan said that closed schools will have a negative impact on the educational sector in the country and asked the government to reopen schools for girls.

“If they don’t give girls the right it will have a bad impact on society,” said Zmarai Nasery, a Badakhshan resident.

Meanwhile the department of Information and culture in Badakhshan said that the leaders of the Islamic Emirate will take a decision.

“If the Islamic Emirate takes a decision about opening schools above grade six, local officials in Badakhshan are prepared and they don’t have any problems,” said Mazullden Ahmadi, head of the information and culture department in Badakhshan.

It has been more than one year since the schools for female students above grade six have remained closed, and leaders of the Islamic Emirate have not made a decision about opening schools.
