Iran Calls for Monthly Assessment of the Helmand River

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need for a monthly assessment of the Helmand River for Iran's water rights to be honored.

Nasser Kanani, spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry, said during a press conference that the first visit of the Iranian delegation to the Helmand River is a sign of the beginning of positive interactions between the two countries.

“We consider the visit of the technical delegation of Iran as committed to the treaty of the 1351 solar year regarding the Helmand River issue,” said Nasser Kanani.

Nasser Kanani added that “according to the treaty, such visits should be made continuously at regular monthly intervals,”

Meanwhile, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate said that in order to convince Tehran, they have prepared the way for a delegation of Iran to visit the Helmand River.

“The Iranians were worried about the water sector in Helmand, and there were various statements about it, but finally we were able to provide the Iranian delegation with the opportunity to come and see the water, and they were finally convinced, and you heard their statements,” said Amir Khan Muttaqi.

“There is no such thing in the treaty that they should go and visit the Helmand River and Kajaki Dam,” said Abdul Jalil Sherani, an economist.

Earlier, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, Iran's representative and ambassador in Kabul, said that the investigations of the Iranian delegation show that the flow of water passing through the Deh Rawood system in the month of Asad this year is less than the monthly amount of a normal water year.
